Working series about Weather and Predictions (2021-)

A Storm is Blowing from Paradise - [ Acting against God - the sound that explores the point atmospheric phenomena became deterministic occurrences ]

Imagining a sequence of weather narratives around the wind, Quantum Foam synthesises field recordings and deconstructs the audio into shuffle-able components open for a stochastic takeover.

A Storm is Blowing From Paradise boldly experiments with random modulation over the midi velocity of the drums to convey the degree of entropy of the chaotic atmosphere.

Rhythm of Chance (2021)

Will it be sunny? Will it be windy? What are the chances?...

Rhythm of Chance originates from the exercise to map the history of weather with the impact of Liverpool’s Royal Charter shipwreck in the Irish Sea on the advancement of weather forecasting - the critical turn when atmospheric phenomena perceived as uncertain acts of god became deterministic occurrences. A series of weather proverbs in Irish folklores of how to tell the weather is unveiled. These texts, suggesting an ambiguous sense of causality (or not), are visually presented in TVs in sets of random functions. The sound performance is accompanied with live projection of audio-reactive wind particles, which imagines a sequence of narratives around the wind, to deconstruct the audio into shuffle-able components open for a stochastic takeover.

Weather undetermined, nevertheless (permitted).

Semiotics of Weather

Research, Time-based Media and Workshops
In collaboration with Claudine Hubert(CA), Flor de Fuego(AR/DE) and Naoto Hieda(DE/JP)

What do we know about Predicting the Future? Is it chance? Is it deterministic?

Research on the semiotics of weather has lead to a collaborated project Meteoromancer, a shortened form of  Meteorological Cartomancer, to create performative audiovisual online platform intersecting art, technology and weather science. It plays with the concept of alchemy by coding with weather-the ever changing atmospheric state. Archival texts and images from the MET Office and Science Museum Collection, and historic literature on meteorology were categorised and blended with open source video synthesiser (Hydra - live coding project developed by Olivia Jack). We use the storytelling method to engage the audience about the history of meteorology by categorising the knowledge into tarot deck/shuffling of cards. Echoing with the random but deterministic character of the weather, we are using 'chance' as an aesthetic language for our creative process, therefore cartomancy, an ancient form of oracle that employs chance.
